The Kearsley Varsity Girls team traveled to Canton, Michigan to bowl in the MHSAA State Finals on Friday, March 2nd at SuperBowl Lanes. The Kearsley girls started the day with Baker games of 159 and 219 and took an early lead of the 18 teams competing for the state title. After the next 6 Baker games the Kearsley girls were still in 1st place entering the 2 individual games of qualifying. A slow start in the individual game resulted in a 830 team game, one of the Kearsley girls lowest team games of the season and it dropped them to 2nd place in the standings but the Kearsley girls responded with a 910 actual the last team game which resulted in the Lady Hornets qualifying #1 overall by beating Battle Creek Pennfield by 52 pins for the top qualifying spot. After qualifying scores were totaled up, the field was cut to the top 8 teams with an NCAA bracket style format to follow. The Kearsley girls had to bowl the #8 seed Sturgis in the first round and they came out strong in the Baker games by winning both Baker games by scores of 159 to 126 and 196 to 145 and the Lady Hornets needed the big lead because Sturgis caught fire and had an 878 team game to Kearsley’s 847 team game but the Kearsley girls won on total pins 1202 to 1149. Next up was Carelton Airport who knocked off Charlotte in the first round and the Kearsley girls again started the match strong by winning both Baker games by scores of 147 to 102 and 179 to 129 and then won the team game 787 to 743 for a total score of 1113 to 974. The win sent the Lady Hornets into the state championship match against Tecumseh who knocked off Mason in the semi final match. The Lady Hornets won the first Baker game 143 to 140 and then won the second Baker game 184 to 177 to take a slim lead into the individual game, with the state title on the line, the Kearsley girls turned it on and won the team game 859 to 673 and the total final pinfall was Kearsley 1189 to Tecumseh 990. In the title match the team was led by Barbara Hawes with a 186 game, Emma Boychuk had a 173 game and Karlee Griffin had a 158 game. The win for the Lady Hornets makes them state champions for the 5th consecutive year and 6th time in the last 7 years.
