The Kearsley Varsity girls traveled to Owosso for the 8th Annual Lila Furnish Classic Tournament at Capitol Bowl. The Lady Hornets began the day with 12 Baker games for qualifying as they had games of 178,164,163,194,169,193,180,156,178,177,204,200 for a 2156 total and the top qualifying spot. The 2nd place team of Davison was more than 200 pins behind for qualifying and 3rd place Birch Run and 4th place Flushing were well behind.
The field was then cut to the top 8 teams as the 1st seed bowled the 8th seed and the 2nd seed the 7th seed and so on. Kearsley’s first round match was against the 8th seed Ovid Elsie girls and in the 2 game Baker match the Kearsley girls bowled games of 203 & 202 to Ovid Elsie’s148 & 169. Now with the field down to the final 4 the Kearsley girls had to bowl against Metro Conference rival Flushing and the Kearsley girls came out on fire as they had a 255 game to Flushing’s 181, the 2nd game didn’t go as well as Flushing beat Kearsley 161 to 147 but the total pins for the match were Kearsley 402 to Flushing’s 342 as the Lady Hornets moved into the title match. On the other side of the bracket Davison defeated Birch Run to move into the finals after qualifying 2nd. In the first game of the finals the Lady Hornets dropped a close game 184 to 182 but it didn’t deter them as they came back to win the second game 176 to 153 and the total final pinfall was Kearsley 368 to Davison’s 337 as the Kearsley girls won this tournament for the 5th straight year.
The next competition for the Kearsley girls will be on Saturday, January 12th at Colonial Lanes in Flushing at 1pm as the Lady Hornets put their 8-0 record on the line against Owosso.
